BJP candidate from Bengal’s Asansol and famed Bhojpuri actor Pawan Singh has withdrawn his candidature from the party’s list of candidates, which was released partially on Saturday, March 2.

In a post on his X handle, the actor said, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party. The party trusted me and declared me as the candidate from Asansol but due to some reason I will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol.”

Initially, there was a misconception that confused the actor with Trinamool BJP MLA from Barrackpore, Bhatpara Pawan Singh. The air was cleared when the BJP declared the candidates for 195 seats.

The actor has been drawing immense flak on social media from a large section of Bengalis, who highlighted Pawan Singh’s music videos and film scenes which vehemently objectify Bengali women.

While the air hasn’t been cleared by either the actor or the party, criticism may be one of the primary reasons why Pawan Singh has refused to fight the general elections.

Hailing from Bihar’s Arrah district, Pawan Singh is famed for his allegedly vile song ”Lollypop Lagelu”. He has starred in nearly a hundred films in the Bhojpuri language.

Bhojpuri actress Akshara Singh had filed an FIR against Pawan in 2019 alleging that the actor was giving her death threats and posted vulgar pictures of her on social media.

Pawan’s second wife Jyoti Singh had alleged that the Bhojpuri star had forcibly aborted her two times and that she was subjected to domestic violence.
