Commencing Monday, February 26, the state government has started the distribution of overdue wages for the 24.5 lakh MGNREGA workers who were denied payments by the Union government due to the fund blockade imposed on Bengal.

According to estimates provided by the state Panchayats and Rural Development (P&RD) department, the total disbursement to job-card holders across all the 23 districts will exceed Rs 2,560 crore.

District magistrates have received instructions to complete facilitation of direct benefit transfers (DBT) to the bank accounts of beneficiaries by March 1.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, speaking at a state government benefits distribution event in Siuri, Birbhum district last Sunday, assured compensation to job-card holders who missed out on wages for 100 days of work due to the actions of the Union government.
