Bengal to get 8 more medical colleges

Bengal is set to get eight more medical colleges. According to reports, the Union government approved 112 medical colleges across the country, and the eight in Bengal were among them.

Of the eight, one will be a government-controlled one—at IIT Kharagpur—while the remaining will be private medical colleges.

While two each will be located in North 24-Parganas and Nadia districts, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman and Murshidabad will get one each.

As a result of the eight new medical colleges, the number of government medical colleges will increase to 30 and private to 14, and the number of MBBS seats in the state will rise to 6,000.

The eight medical colleges are:

  • Dr BC Roy Multi Speciality Medical Research Centre (at IIT Kharagpur) (Paschim Medinipur district)
  • MR Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital in Balisha, Ashoknagar (North 24-Parganas district)
  • PKG Medical College and Hospital in New Town (North 24-Parganas district)
  • Mandakini Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital in Ranaghat (Nadia district)
  • Krishnanagar Institute of Medical Science in Krishnanagar (Nadia district)
  • Bharat Medical College and Hospital in Purulia (Purulia district)
  • East West Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Talit (Purba Bardhaman district)
  • Jakir Hossain Medical College and Research Institute in Raghunathganj (Murshidabad district)

Moreover, the number of MBBS seats in Murshidabad Medical College, Malda Medical College, Sagar Dutta Medical College in Kamarhati, ESI Medical College in Joka, KPC Medical College in Jadavpur, IQ City Medical College in Durgapur and Sonka Medical College are also increasing.
