Considering that the cause of almost 70 per cent of road accidents every year in the country is speeding, and a lot of accidents occur in Bengal too for this reason, the state government has decided to bring in a speed management policy.

Among the plans are creating safe corridors out of the accident-prone roads by fixing speed limits and setting up signage, both for pedestrians and drivers, said State Transport Minister Snehasish Chakraborty in an interview to a newspaper.

With the rapid increase in roads over the last 10 years or so, the number of road accidents have also risen.

Bengal will be the first state in the country to bring such a policy, for which it is collaborating with transport experts at IIT Kharagpur.

West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police, and the departments of Panchayats and Rural Development, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Health and Family Welfare and School Education are also part of the policy-making process.

The government has already started some work on this aspect. For starters, a safe speed audit has been taken up of the roads under the Panchayats and Rural Development Department, in which aspects of road engineering and traffic engineering have been incorporated.
