Three more traditional handicrafts from Bengal have been recognised as geographical indications (GIs). The GI tags, as the recognitions are called, have been given to Tangail, korial and garad sarees.

The news was posted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). “I congratulate the artisans for their skills and achievements. We are proud of them. Our congratulations to them,” she added.

Tangail sarees are woven in Nadia and Purba Bardhaman districts, korial sarees are woven in Murshidabad district and garad sarees are woven in Birbhum district.

While Tangail is made of cotton, korial and garad are types of silk.

The other sarees from Bengal recognised with GI tags in India are Santipore saree, Baluchari saree and Dhaniakhali saree.
