Bengal issues new guideline on dengue

The Bengal Health Department has announced a 14-point guideline for effectively combating dengue. Dengue has hit a few districts of the state, including Kolkata, hard this year and hence the need has arisen for a more efficient strategy.

The key points of the guideline are:

  • Setting up fever clinics in hospitals.
  • Documenting patients who come to hospitals with fever.
  • 24-hour pathological lab facility for dengue patients in hospitals.
  • Same-day physical examination reports for dengue-suspected cases.
  • Initial immediate blood test reports for patients admitted to hospitals for suspected dengue.
  • Doctors must alert the hospital if any alarming find is made on testing the blood.
  • Assistant superintendent to be appointed in all hospitals specially for handling dengue cases.
  • The nursing superintendent must inform the specially-appointed assistant superintendent on all aspects related to the admitted dengue cases.
  • Examination of the admitted dengue patients must be done at regular intervals.
  • Weekly meetings on all dengue cases must be held.
  • Hospital premises must be kept clean.
  • All dengue-related information must be uploaded on the Health Department portal by all hospitals at regular hospitals.
  • Awareness posters on dengue must be put up at prominent places in hospitals.
  • Vector-control personnel must regularly visit hospitals for thorough checks.
  • Adequate supply of platelets in blood banks at all hours must be ensured.
