Bengal in the Olympics

Bengal over the years has left its mark on the Olympic games.

Hockey players like Keshab Dutta, Gurbaksh Singh and Leslie Claudius have won multiple medals for the country.

Sailen Manna was the captain of the football team in 1952 and Samar Banerjee in 1958. Most of the players of the Indian football team at that time were from Bengal.

After independence, almost every Olympics has had a representative from Bengal.

The father-son duo of Vece Paes and Leander Paes have won bronze medals for the country.  Vece Paes won a bronze for hockey in 1972 and Leander Paes for table tennis in 1996.

Be it cycling, weightlifting, shooting, archery, table tennis, swimming and even in golf, various athletes from Bengal have represented the country in the Olympics at different times.
