The Bengal government is currently engaged in revitalising the 137-year-old Shalimar Shipyard located in Shibpur, Howrah district, with the aim of expanding its business operations. The government has also provided cranes to facilitate the establishment of a dry dock, enabling the lifting of vessels from the river for repair purposes.

The state government has delegated the manufacturing of RO-RO vessels, bus repairs and other tasks to the shipyard, which employs approximately 100 staff members, including engineers.

Notably, the company has undergone a remarkable turnaround, experiencing a substantial increase in turnover during FY24. The turnover, which stood at Rs 2.41 crore and Rs 3.67 crore in FY22 and FY23, respectively, surged to Rs 23.54 crore in the just-concluded financial year. The profit generated from non-core business activities amounted to Rs 1 crore.

Shalimar Shipyard has historically served as a significant ship manufacturing and repair facility on the eastern coast, predating Garden Reach. Over the years, it has manufactured nearly 600 vessels and supplied products to the Indian Navy.
