On Tuesday, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted that if the Union government failed to settle its dues by April 1, the state administration would step in to aid in the construction of homes for roughly 11.2 lakh beneficiaries of the PM Awas Yojana in the state.

“Bengal will not plead for its rightful dues but will vigorously fight for its entitlements,” she stated firmly during at an administrative review meeting, against the backdrop of the state initiating payments of wage dues to 24.5 lakh workers engaged in the 100 days’ work scheme under MGNREGA, following the Union government’s refusal to do so alleging corruption.

The non-payment of Central dues to Bengal serves as a key point of contention for AITC against the BJP in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

In the event of the Union government failing to disburse the owed funds under the PM Awas Yojana, she said at the meeting, the tribal development boards would finance the construction of approximately 17 lakh houses, in phases, for Bengal’s underprivileged citizens.
