Bengal gets new district
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today officially announced the formation of a new district, Sundarbans, at an administrative review meeting in Hingalganj in the Sundarbans region of North 24 Parganas district.
She was also scheduled to officially announce the formation of Basirhat district, now a block in North 24 Parganas, but postponed it.
The intention behind the creation of the new districts is better administration. The chief minister said at the programme that the formation of Sundarbans district will help in, among other things, conservation efforts and tackling better the impact of extreme weather events like cyclones.
