Bengal child rights body lashes out at Suvendu Adhikari, asks Abu Taher for apology

The West Bengal Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) lashed out at two senior leaders from the state at a press conference today. BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the assembly Suvendu Adhikari and Trinamool Congress MP of Murshidabad constituency, Abu Taher Khan were the targets of WBCPCR.

As we had reported, Adhikari was show-caused after the commission received a complaint on a tweet by him.

In the tweet, WBCPCR’s show-cause notice to the BJP leader says, he had “reportedly falsely insinuated that there was a grand birthday of the child [Trinamool MP and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s three-year-old son] at ‘Taj Bengal’ ” and that, the state’s security apparatus was used to provide security at the private party.

The notice says the tweet amounted to resorting to “inferior and demeaning tactics involving an innocent child in an attempt to settle political scores”.

At the press conference, WBCPCR advisor Ananya Chakraborty spoke at length about this issue and asked the BJP leader to delete the tweet and tender an apology. She also said that in case he did not respond to the show-cause notice, the commission would take legal steps.

The incident concerning Trinamool MP Abu Taher Khan occurred on November 16 in the Nowda police station area in Murshidabad district. That afternoon, Khan’s car accidentally ran over a four-year-old boy, with him sitting inside. The boy was taken to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where he died.

Today, Ananya Chakraborty said that if Abu Taher tendered an apology, the commission would not send him a notice, as it was an accident. She also asked the Murshidabad superintendent of police and district magistrate to send their reports on the incident to the Child Rights Commission.
