Bengal best in 100 Days’ Work Scheme

Usually, 28 crore man-days are created annually in Bengal under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), often called the 100 Days’ Work Scheme.

And during the financial  year 2020-21, that is, the current one, in just the first seven months, the state government has already created 27.23 crore man-days.

With this success, the Centre has been induced to increase Bengal’s target for the financial year from 22 crore to 31 crore.

At the same time, the daily payment for the workers has been increased from Rs 192.19 to Rs 178.62.

Economic experts believe that the state government’s undertaking of various projects to help the many migrant workers who had to return home from across the country following the loss of work due to the lockdown, coupled with the efficiently coordinated implementation of all the projects by the Panchayats and Rural Development Department have enabled Bengal’s success in the 100 Days’ Work Scheme.
