The Bank Bachao Desh Bachao Manch (BBDBM), a coalition of diverse stakeholders within the banking sector, addressed a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, March 18, beseeching her to intervene to prevent the potential relocation of the State Bank of India’s (SBI) Centralised Global Back Office (CGBO) from Kolkata.

The communication underscores SBI’s proposed move to transfer a substantial segment of forex operations from its Global Market Unit, currently housed at Jeevan Sudha Building, 42/C Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Kolkata 700071, to Mumbai.

According to the letter, this entails relocating the CGBO, which operates 24×7 across various time zones such as Sydney, Bahrain, Hong Kong, London and New York, representing vital central treasuries.

In the letter, Soumya Datta, the convener of BBDBM, implored the CM to take decisive action, stating that they are earnestly appealing to her esteemed office to take necessary measures to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the esteemed Global Market Unit of the SBI in Kolkata, and to counteract any adverse intentions of the Union government aimed at depriving the state of Bengal.
