After removing Mahasweta Devi’s texts from syllabus, DU to name college after Savarkar

Delhi University (DU) has decided to construct a college and name it after the Hindu Mahasabha and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Such a resolution has already been passed by DU’s academic council.

Along with that, the university has decided to name several bhawans (buildings) of the institution after BJP leaders who have passed away, like Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley.

This comes right after the deletion of esteemed Bengali author and tribal rights activist Mahasweta Devi’s short story ‘Draupadi’ as a text from DU’s syllabus for English Honours. Two more texts by women Dalit authors Bama and Sukartharini have also been removed from the curriculum.

Academics throughout India had slammed the decision, saying it was a deliberate attempt to politicise education and make the future generations ignorant of the realities of tribal life.

The university has been drawing flak from various sections of society for quite some time. These incidents add up to the list of ignominies.
