A delegation led by Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee met the Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Monday night regarding the detainment of the party’s delegation from outside the Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi.

On Monday, the Delhi Police detained 10 Trinamool Congress leaders during a demonstration outside the Election Commission’s (EC) office, demanding a shift in leadership within central agencies such as the CBI, NIA, ED and Income Tax Department. The demand stems from the fact that these agencies are hounding the party’s leaders as well as those of the other major Opposition parties despite the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct due to the Lok Sabha elections.

Trinamool MPs Derek O’Brien, Sagarika Ghose, Dola Sen, Saket Gokhale and Nadimul Haque, student leader Sudip Raha, and ex-MPs Abir Ranjan Biswas, Dr Shantanu Sen, Arpita Ghosh and Vivek Gupta had planned a 24-hour sit-in protest outside the EC’s office but after they were detained, vowed to continue with it at the Mandir Marg Police Station.

Abhishek Banerjee and other leaders on Monday night urged the governor to intervene, calling the Delhi Police’s action a “black spot” on democracy, asking why the chief election commissioner was “silent”.

“He doesn’t want free and fair polls. They want a field empty of Opposition,” said Abhishek Banerjee.

CV Ananda Bose assured the delegation of prompt action, saying he would write to the Election Commission.
