Abhishek Banerjee undergoes successful eye operation

One of the most well-recognised faces of Bengal politics, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has been suffering from an eye problem for quite some time.

In 2016, while returning to Kolkata along Durgapur Expressway after a public meeting in Murshidabad, he met with an accident, damaging his left eye and leading to an orbital fracture. An operation was conducted at Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata, followed by three more operations in Hyderabad and one each in Singapore and Dubai.

Despite the six operations, the MP continued to suffer from severe headaches and visual impairment in his left eye. Therefore, this October, he went to the Wilmer Eye Institute, an eye hospital-cum-research institute in USA—part of Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, which is about a four-hour drive from New York City—for better treatment.

After a check-up on October 5, Dr David L Guyten and Dr Nicholas R Mahoney performed a successful operation on the left eye on October 12. While Dr Guyten performed a vision-correction operation, Dr Mahoney operated on the orbital fracture.

Following a six-day rest, both doctors separately checked up on Abhishek Banerjee and declared that there had been a visible improvement in his condition. He will have to wear spectacles for the next six months and after that period is over, return for another round of check-ups.

The doctors also allowed him to undertake the 14-hour flight back home. According to sources, he will return to Kolkata before Kali Puja.

He has been advised by the doctors to not spend too much time talking on the phone. Exposure to heat would also negatively affect his recovery, and therefore this Kali Puja, he will not participate in the yajna.
