Vinesh Phogat suffered a devastating setback today as she was disqualified from the Paris Olympics. The unfortunate turn of events unfolded on the morning of her 50 kg gold medal bout when she failed to meet the weight requirements.

She was overweight by a mere 100g, which would not have made a difference during the fight, but it was a technical fault, nevertheless.

According to the Indian team doctor, Dr Pardiwala, in an interview to the official broadcaster, Jio Cinema, Vinesh had three strenuous bouts on Tuesday and so had to take some extra fluids after those. When her weight was measured in the evening, it was found to be 2 kg above 50 kg.

Her trainers immediately went into damage control mode: She spent considerable time in the sauna and then at the gym, running, cycling and doing other exercises, even cutting her hair and shortening her dress, according to Dr Pardiwala, in order to lose those two kilograms. But to no avail ultimately: when she was weighed in this morning, she was found to be 100g overweight—enough to disqualify her from the final.

The person whom she defeated, Yusneylys Guzmán of Cuba would fight in the final against Sarah Hildebrandt of USA.
