As preparation for a possible third wave of COVID-19, Bengal government directs 79 government hospitals to set up a ‘hybrid CCU’ each

Preparing for a possible third wave of COVID-19, the Bengal Health Department has instructed 79 government hospitals across the state to set up a ‘hybrid CCU’ each. The step has been taken on an emergency basis to strengthen the critical care infrastructure in the state.

Each hybrid CCU will have six beds fitted with a ventilation system (HDUs or high-dependency units) and 18 beds will have critical care support (critical care units or CCUs). Thus, each hybrid CCU will have 24 beds with life support systems.

Being a combination of HDUs and CCUs, these units have been named as ‘hybrid CCUs’.

According to the number of beds in a hospital, the Health Department has also asked the private hospitals and nursing homes to increase the number of resident medical officers and registered nurses.

To effect the above directive, the state government has made necessary amendments in the West Bengal Clinical Establishments (Registration, Regulation and Transparency) Act.
