As part of improving the policing system in Kolkata, a fleet of 30 motorcycles have been deployed at 30 police stations from Friday. This fleet of ‘Dial 100’ motorcycles would be the first responder to any distress call to 100—the police helpline—at Lalbazar, thus reducing the reaction time.

While launching the 30 bikes at Lalbazar, Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal said 42 more will be launched in July, so that there is one for each of the 72 police stations in the Kolkata Police.

The control room at the Kolkata police headquarters in Lalbazar is equipped to take 30 distress calls (made to Dial 100) simultaneously. According to officials, while the average time for a patrol van to reach the spot is eight minutes, it is expected to reduce significantly with the motorbikes.

Soon after a call comes, a message with the details of the call, the caller, along with the address will start blinking on a screen (data monitor) on the bike stationed at the police station concerned.

The officer on the bike will file an action-taken report after addressing the problem.

The bikes are red in colour and are fitted with hooters.
