Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s 12-day business trip to Spain has already turned out to be quite fruitful for Bengal. Besides discussions with business personalities and groups with regard to the upcoming Bengal Global Business Summit, in which the chief minister and various industry representatives from the state accompanying her have participated, three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) have been signed.

One signed during a business session attended by the chief minister would see the Spanish textile major Tempe Grupo Inditex (formerly called Zara, which brand is now a part of the company) partner with private entities to shift some of its manufacturing to Bengal. The production is expected to start before this Christmas, and the state government would provide 100 acres at concessional prices and all other manner of support to make the venture successful.

Another signed between the Bengal government and La Liga, the Spanish football league, would see the latter set up a football academy in the state.

A third one signed between the Publishers and Booksellers Guild, which organises the International Kolkata Book Fair, and Madrid Book Fair would see Bengali writers and publishers getting a dedicated space at the latter event, as well as marketing and promotional support. India will be the theme country at the 2025 Madrid Book Fair.

Notably, the theme country for the 2023 Kolkata Book Fair was Spain. Like Spain, Bengal too has a very rich literary tradition.
