Drivers and riders in Kolkata will soon have the option to utilise Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to pay traffic fines immediately on being fined, alongside the existing methods of cash or card payments.

Kolkata Traffic Police has initiated live trials in all 25 traffic divisions and is contemplating a potential launch around Republic Day (January 26). After extensive testing at four traffic divisions last year, the police have trained officers across all divisions.

It has been found by the traffic police authorities that drivers and riders often do not have adequate amounts on them to be able to pay in cash and both drivers and riders, and officers find card transactions cumbersome and time-consuming.

There is a growing demand from motorists for QR code-based UPI payments through mobile applications.
