The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) had a massive win in Bengal winning 29 seats, reducing Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) tally in the process to just 12. The other seat was won by Congress.

The AITC increased its seats from 22 in 2019 to 29. There were close losses on three seats—Bishnupur, Purulia and Kanthi.

In terms of share of the votes polled, the party got 45.77 per cent, increasing its tally by almost 2 per cent, from the 43.7 per cent of 2019.

Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee won by the highest margin in the state, beating his nearest rival by 7,10,930 seats, and breaking the 20-year-old record for the state set by the CPI(M)’s Anil Basu. This was also India’s fourth highest winning margin in this general election, after Shankar Lalwani, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Amit Shah, all from the BJP.

Surprisingly, long-time Congress MP and the leader of the Opposition in the last Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury lost from Baharampur, losing to newcomer Yusuf Pathan of the AITC by a good marging.
