Trinamool announces candidates for Assembly by-elections

June 14, 2024 | < 1 min read

The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) today (June 14) announced its four candidates for the Bengal Assembly by-elections on July 10.

Madhuparna Thakur, the daughter of the party’s Rajya Sabha MP (and former Lok Sabha MP from Bangaon) Mamata Bala Thakur, has been nominated from the Matua-dominated constituency of Bagda (within the Bangaon parliamentary constituency).

Supti Pande, the widow of the former Trinamool MLA Sadhan Pande, has been given the Maniktala seat to fight for, from which her late husband was a long-time MLA (first with Congress, then with Trinamool Congress). As per several news reports, her daughter Shrreya Pande, who has been known to harbour political ambitions, was having high hopes for getting nominated for this seat.

The nominees for Raiganj and Ranaghat Dakshin are Krishna Kalyani and Mukut Mani Adhikari, respectively. They had shifted allegiance before the general election from Bharatiya Janata Party—whose MLAs they were from these very same constituencies—and then contested for the Lok Sabha from Raiganj and Ranaghat, respectively, which they lost. Therefore, now, they would be trying their luck from the same constituencies, but for the party they had opposed to win in 2021.
