Tomato is selling at an all-time high across the country, the prices being Rs 100 to 170 per kg. The drastic rise in the price of this essential vegetable is exerting financial strain on household budgets and also compelling many of them to curtail their consumption.

Delayed monsoon, inadequate production and extreme heat have been cited as key reasons behind the increase in tomato prices across the country.

Experts have stated that the fall in prices to normal levels would depend on when the tomatoes from the kharif crop are released in the market. Currently, according to experts, this seems unlikely before mid-August.
