Howrah in Bengal has been ranked as the least cleanest city in India among those with a population of more than 1 lakh, as per the recently released annual cleanliness survey by the Union government, ‘Swachh Survekshan’.

Not just that, the bottom 10 cities in the category of large cities, consisting of 446 cities, are all from Bengal.

Kalyani, Madhyagram, Krishnanagar, Asansol, Rishra, Bidhannagar, Kanchrapara, Kolkata and Bhatpara rank after Howrah, in this order.

The cities were evaluated based on their cleanliness and sanitation practices.

The best-performing cities, cantonment boards and states were awarded the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 in a ceremony attended by President Droupadi Murmu and several other dignitaries.

Indore in Madhya Pradesh was adjudged the cleanest city for the seventh consecutive time, followed by Surat in Gujarat, Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.

In the category of cities with a population of less than 1 lakh, Saswad in Maharashtra ranked on top, followed by Patan in Gujarat and Lonavala in Maharashtra. Pungro in Nagaland occupied the last rank in this category.

In the category of the cleanest cantonment boards, the Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh ranked first, while Nainital Cantonment ranked last.

Being held since 2016, Swachh Survekshan, with the participation of 4,447 urban local bodies and over 12 crore citizen responses now, holds the distinction of being the largest cleanliness survey in the world.
