Possibly, first FIR by a prominent victim of CoWin data leak

One of the most prominent victims of the personal data leak from the CoWin COVID-19 vaccination portal, reported on extensively in the media, was Trinamool Congress MP from Bengal, Derek O’Brien.

Yesterday, he filed an FIR, asking for an investigation into the leak, at the Cyber Police Station, Lalbazar – the headquarters of Kolkata Police.

This is possibly the first formal police complaint by a prominent victim of the data breach.

The FIR asks the police to “take urgent steps to investigate and book the antisocial elements under Sections 120B/379/405/409/411/414/426 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 read with Sections 66/66B/66C/70 of the Information Technology Act, 2002 read with Sections 37 of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 206”.
