With the latest hikes in petrol and diesel prices on Sunday, on an average they are now 30 per cent costlier than even jet fuel.

Petrol and diesel prices again rose on Sunday, and with this, petrol now costs Rs 100 per litre or more in all the Indian state and Union territory capitals.

As for diesel, the prices have touched that mark in more than a dozen capitals, the latest being Bengaluru, Daman and Silvassa.

Not just that, incredible as it may sound, the average prices of petrol and diesel are now approximately 30 per cent more than even jet fuel, as the highly refined and therefore, costly fuel used in planes is called. Being highly refined, it’s also called white petrol.

Petrol and diesel prices are hiked by different amounts in different cities by the oil marketing companies (OMCs), which refine the crude oil and sell its various extracts.

On Sunday, the prices of petrol and diesel rose by 31 to 35 paise per litre in the four metro cities.

Various commissions and taxes, by both the Union and state governments, add up to make the final price of each fuel. Since state taxes differ from state to state, prices also differ from state to state.

Being a net importer, India’s prices of petrol and diesel are also tied to the international rate.

The international benchmark Brent crude oil is trading at US$84.8 per barrel for the first time in seven years. A month back, it was trading at US$73.51.
