The Gujarat High Court today refused to stay the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case on his insulting people with the surname of Modi, which had also led to his disqualification from Parliament.

Today’s verdict means that he will also not be able to contest elections.

The Congress party said it is an unfortunate judgment and that they would appeal to the Supreme Court.

“It is very unfortunate that justice has not prevailed. It is a murder of democracy. But still the entire country, all the opposition parties and the people of this country stand by Rahul ii. He is a great leader who has been fighting across the country,” Karnataka deputy chief minister and senior party leader DK Shivakumar said in a video shared by the news agency ANI.

The arrogant power is trying every trick to suppress the truth. … But, in front of truth, satyagraha and the power of the people, neither the arrogance of power nor the veil of lies over the truth will last long. … Truth will win. The voice of the public will win,” Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul’s sister. Shared in a long tweet in Hindi.

The BJP, on the other hand, is ecstatic. “Rahul has insulted the OBC community in his remark. … Rahul has no control over his tongue. We welcome Gujarat high court’s decision,” senior spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
