Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong pitch for uniform civil code (UCC), one of its electoral promises in 2019, on Tuesday at the BJP rally for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections later this year, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), India’s top Islamic religious law body, convened a late-night emergency meeting on the same day to discuss the implications of the prime minister’s words.

The AIMPLB president, Saifullah Rehmani, chairman of Islamic Centre of India and member of AIMPLB, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali and others present at the virtual meeting have decided to firmly present their views in front of the Law Commission.

It is to be noted that the Law Commission a few years back had explicitly stated in its report that uniform civil code is not needed and is not feasible for India.

Despite that, the Commission’s recent notification asking for views from the public on UCC (for which it has given a month) has several critics of UCC and political commentators saying that it was done under pressure from the Modi government.

The BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS have long stated that their ultimate aim for India is to transform it into a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ or ‘Hindu Nation’, moving diametrically opposite the Constitution-stated prescription for India to be a secular nation.
