Pacer Mohammed Shami has been sidelined from the upcoming Indian Premier League, slated to start next month, due to a left ankle injury that necessitates surgery in the UK.

Currently not participating in the ongoing Test series against England, the 33-year-old’s most recent appearance for India was in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November.

Shami played a pivotal role in India’s journey to the final of the recently-concluded World Cup, where they suffered a defeat against Australia in Ahmedabad.

However, following his exceptional performance in the tournament, the seasoned seamer faced a significant period of inactivity due to the aforementioned injury.

Shami’s absence presents a substantial setback for his IPL team, Gujarat Titans, as he has been a standout performer for them. With 48 wickets in 33 matches for the Titans, Shami boasts an average of 21.04 and a strike rate of 15.75, the best among all IPL franchises.

This season, the Titans will be led by young India batter Shubman Gill, following the transfer of Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians.

According to reports, they are scheduled to face MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the tournament on March 22.
