According to data released by the Election Commission (given to it by the State Bank of India, following orders by the Supreme Court), Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL), a significant contributor of Rs 584 crore in electoral bonds to the BJP, procured electoral bonds worth Rs 140 crore in April 2023, just prior to being awarded a lucrative Rs 14,400-crore tunnel project in Mumbai.

The Hyderabad-based company is among the foremost purchasers of electoral bonds, with a total contribution of Rs 966 crore, approximately 60 per cent of which was directed towards the BJP.

In 2023, MEIL successfully secured the contract for the Thane-Borivali Underground Twin Tube Road Tunnel project, which will run below the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai, which had a contract value worth Rs 14,400 crore. Notably, the company made the substantial purchase of Rs 140 crore worth of electoral bonds one month prior to winning this contract.

The twin tunnel project, covering a distance of 11.84 km, is subject to a four-year completion timeline and is divided into two packages.

Moreover, in collaboration with others, MEIL also bagged the contract for a bullet train station at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai.

Notably, MEIL incurred penalties from the Mumbai civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for delays in a road concreting project within the city, whose contract was worth a huge Rs 1800 crore, approximately.
