Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) has withdrawn support to the BJP’s N Biren Singh government in Manipur over the ethno-communal conflict in Manipur. The decision was conveyed to Governor Anusuiya Uikey today through a letter.

“After careful consideration of the current conflagration, the continued support for the incumbent government of Manipur led by CM N Biren Singh is no longer fructuous,” wrote KPA chief Tongmang Haokip.

However, it would not affect the stability of the government as KPA has only two MLAs in the 60-member assembly.

The ruling coalition, as it now stands, has 37 BJP MLAs, seven NPP MLAs, five NPF MLAs and three Independents. The opposition consisted of five from the Congress and one from the JD(U). To this grouping would now be added two KPA MLAs.

Kuki-Zomi community leaders, though, said that in view of the current situation, it would not be possible for Kuki MLAs to attend the Assembly session scheduled to start on August 21.

There are 10 Kuki-Zomi MLAs, including seven from the BJP, two from the KPA and one Independent.

These 10 MLAs have also been demanding a separate administration for the Kuki-Zomis, which continues to be rejected by the Union government.
