Ladakh gets 5 more districts
Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang will be the five new districts in the union territory of Ladakh, Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah announced in a post on X on Monday, August 26.
Thus, from two—Leh and Kargil—the number has jumped to seven.
Previously, Leh was divided into six subdivisions and Kargil into four.
A Home Ministry spokesperson said in a statement that Ladakh being an extremely difficult terrain, the creation of the new districts will lead to the public welfare schemes of the Union government and Ladakh administration reaching the people easily and thus bringing rapid development.
To promote all-round development of the union territory, the budgetary allocation for it has been increased significantly to Rs 5,958 crore per year and the Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation (SIDCO) has been set up, with an equity capital of Rs 25 crore, for the promotion of infrastructure and industrial development, the official further explained.
