Kolkata’s first zero shadow day of the year is June 5

We know the sun is overhead at noon, and hence at that time, the shortest shadows can be seen. It is not exactly overhead, though, transiting a bit lower in altitude either to the north or south.

But that is going to change tomorrow, June 5, which will be the year’s first zero shadow day for Kolkata, albeit for a few moments. On such days, for a very brief period, the sun’s rays fall exactly overhead, producing no shadows at all. Tomorrow, that will happen at 11.34 am, according to astrophysicist Debiprosad Duari, talking to a media outlet.

The second and last zero shadow day for Kolkata will be July 7, called Dakshinayan, on the sun’s return path. At 11.41 am on that day, no shadows will be formed.

People and objects in every place located between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees north of the Equator) and Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees south of the Equator) experience two zero shadow days every year, the day depending on the location of the place, Dr Duari said.

Kolkata is around 93.5 km south of the Tropic of Cancer, the imaginary line passing close to Krishnanagar in Nadia district.

So don’t miss the moment! Go out and see your shadow disappear for a few moments in the morning.
