J&K, Haryana Assembly elections announced

August 16, 2024 | < 1 min read

Heeding a Supreme Court order to ensure that democracy returns to Jammu and Kashmir by September 30 this year, the Election Commission of India (EC) today announced the holding of a three-phase election to the assembly.

The three phases will be held on September 18, September 25 and October 1.

The counting will be held on October 4.

The EC also announced the holding of a single-phase election to the Haryana Assembly on October 1, whose results will also be announced on October 4.

On December 11, 2023, the Supreme Court, delivering judgment on a clutch of petitions challenging the BJP government’s revoking of special status for Jammu and Kashmir and converting it into a Union territory, rejected the petitions, thus upholding the revoking of special status, but also ordered that assembly elections be held there by September 30 next year.

The final voter list would be published by August 20, the day after the Amarnath Yatra ends, the EC said, adding that around 87 lakh people are expected to vote.
