The upcoming 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is primed to kick off in Chennai, as previously reported by Cricbuzz, with the opening ceremony scheduled for March 22, as confirmed by several IPL officials.

“IPL will commence in Chennai on March 22,” announced IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal.

The Chennai Super Kings franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan disclosed to Cricbuzz that the IPL has arranged an inauguration ceremony ahead of the match. Being the defending champions, Chennai has the privilege of hosting the event.

However, it remains uncertain whether the Super Kings will face the Gujarat Titans, the other finalist, in the opening match. “It’s not yet been finalised,” remarked Dhumal, while Viswanathan added, “We currently have no information regarding the opponents.”

Dhumal mentioned that the schedule for the first 10-12 days will be released within the next few days, with the announcement of the complete schedule pending the releasing of the general election dates by the Election Commission of India.

The Election Commission is expected to announce nationwide polling dates between the second and third weeks of March, following which the full IPL schedule will be confirmed.

Dhumal expressed confidence that the league will not need to be relocated outside the country to avoid clashes with the election dates and suggested the possibility of involving more then the usual 10 venues.
