The battle for 2024 will be INDIA versus NDA. That is the general refrain after the 26 Opposition parties meeting in Bengaluru today decided to name their coalition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, or INDIA for short.

Earlier today, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in his inaugural address on the second day of the Opposition conclave, said that the intention behind the coming together was “not to gain power for ourselves” but to “protect our Constitution, democracy, secularism and social justice”.

Crucially for Opposition unity, Kharge said the Congress was not interested in the post of the prime minister.

Several leaders at the meeting hit out at the BJP for making a complete mess of governance in the more than nine years of its being in power and instead using communal issues to divide the country, and draconian laws and Central investigative agencies to try to stamp out the Opposition and those who oppose the government in any form.
