Due to the scorching heat, the requirement for power has also jumped up. In such a situation, the Power Ministry has stressed on importing of coal and has asked the generating companies (gencos) to use the roadways for transporting the fuel, in addition to the railways.

There is a likelihood of big spikes in the requirement for power across the country July and September, according to the ministry—between 2.15 lakh and 2.20 megawatts (MW).

On July 7 last year, India recorded a power usage of 2,00,570 MW. That record was broken on April 29 this year, when the requirement went up to 2,07,111 MW. It needs to be noted in this connection that the average temperate in April in north and central India was the highest in 122 years.

The Union government has asked the thermal power plants to increase their import of coal to deal with the increasing demand. According to ministry sources, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Bengal are not buying their allotted amounts for their plants.

If this continues, when the demand spikes up, there could be a power crisis And for that, these states would be responsible.

To deal with the hike in demand, the government has also asked for closed thermal power plants to start generating once again.
