The Howrah station of the East-West Metro, nestled within the nation’s busiest rail terminal, is poised to claim the title of India’s largest metro station, in addition to being its deepest.

The impressive engineering achievement of constructing a station equivalent to a 10-storey building was an absolute necessity. To align with the under-river tunnel, which plunges to a depth of 40 metres, the station had to be excavated to a depth of 30.5 metre.

Further, with an anticipated footfall of 43,065, necessitating a total floor area of 54,000 square meters according to engineering standards, meticulous planning was imperative.

The design of the Howrah station and other stations along the 4.8-kilometre Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section of the East-West Metro was guided by peak-hour direction traffic.

As the East-West Metro expands to cover its entire 16-kilometre stretch from Howrah Maidan to Sector V, a daily passenger count of approximately 7.5 lakh between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan is expected, with the Howrah metro station being the busiest.
