On the back of soaring tomato, pulse and staple grain prices, the per plate cost of veg and non-veg thali in India has been steadily inching up. This is a measure of the cost of food consumption, calculated monthly by the ratings agency CRISIL.

The prices had been on a decline since last October, but are now climbing up, according to Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics report.

The thali prices for veg food from April to June were Rs 25, Rs 25.10 and Rs 26.30, respectively. The same for non-veg food were Rs 58.30, Rs 59.30 and Rs 60, respectively.

The June prices for both types of thalis, however, were a 5 per cent decline on a year-on-year basis.

While the database maintained by the Price Monitoring Division under the Department of Consumer Affairs showed a rise in the price of tomato by Rs 60-100 per kilo on average of what they were in retail markets in early June, the CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics report said tur and gram prices increased by 3 per cent month-on-month in June.
