From 107 in 2022 to 111 in 2023—India dropped four places from its already precarious ranking in the Global Hunger Index, with its score of 28.7 signifying a level of hunger that is “serious”, as per the terminology used by the index.

According to a report based on the index, India has the highest child-wasting rate in the world at 18.7 per cent. The rate of undernourishment is 16.6 per cent and that of under-five mortality is 3.1 per cent. The prevalence of anaemia in women aged between 15 and 24 years stands at 58.1 per cent.

The index comprehensively measures and tracks hunger at the global, regional and national levels. It is internationally accepted.

India has, however, rejected the index, with the Women and Child Development Ministry saying that it suffers from “serious methodological issues and shows a malafide intent”.
