Former railway minister hails sabotage theory to cosy up to ruling leadership

Following the terrible tragedy in Odisha, a lot of doubts have cropped up in the minds of the people regarding the safety of train travel. Many people, including experts, commentators and politicians, have raised several issues, including delays in implementing certain safety measures.

In the midst of this, former railway minister Dinesh Trivedi said during an interview given to the News18 television channel that the failure of the interlocking system on the tracks, which the current railway minister has pinpointed as the primary cause of the disaster, was not supposed to happen in ordinary circumstances; and therefore, there is a high chance of sabotage behind the accident.

Reacting to this Jairam Ramesh, Congress MP and the party’s communications chief, tweeted yesterday that a former Railway minister is coming up with make-believe stories on the tragedy to impress his current party’s leadership.

He went on to say that the reason behind this attempt at impressing was solely to be able to keep possession of the bungalow in a prime location in Delhi that he got as an MP, but which “he hasn’t vacated even after ceasing to be a MP 18 months ago”, describing the effort as “pathetic”.

As a politician, Trivedi has worn various colours—those of the Congress, Janata Dal, Trinamool Congress and now, finally, the BJP.
