Facing ire, Loreto College withdraws English-medium-only admission decision
In the face of a lot of flak for its decision to admit students only from English-medium schools for its undergraduate courses, Loreto College, Kolkata today withdrew the decision.
After the announcement by the college to ignore applicants from Bengali- and Hindi-medium schools came to light yesterday, the premier institution drew angry reactions from academics and the teaching community, many of whom were surprised by the decision.
Today, the college got a notice from Calcutta University, under whom it is affiliated, regarding this discriminatory stance, following which it sent them a written statement apologising for the decision and taking it back unilaterally.
The announcement shutting out non-English-medium students had come while the college was initiating the online admission process. From this academic year, online admission has become compulsory for all undergraduate courses in colleges and universities affiliated with the state government.
Admissions to undergraduate courses began all over Bengal on July 1.
