ECI announces elections for Rajya Sabha seats

The Election Commission of India today announced elections for Rajya Sabha seats from the states of Bengal, Gujarat and Goa.

While 10 seats will be vacated due to MPs retiring, one seat from Bengal is vacant because of an MP resigning.

The polling will be held on July 24, from 9 am to 4 pm, in the states’ respective assemblies. The counting of votes will take place on the same day at 5 pm.

Retiring members:

Bengal – 7 seats

Derek O’Brien, Dola Sen, Sushmita Dev, Shanta Chhetri, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray (all from Trinamool Congress) and Pradipta Bhattacharya (Congress) – retiring on August 18

Luizinho Faleiro had resigned, both from Rajya Sabha and his party, Trinamool Congress.

Gujarat – 3 seats

Dineshchandra Jemalbhai Anavadiya, Lokhandwala Jugalsinh Mathurji and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar Krishnaswamy (Foreign Minister S Jaishankar) (all from Bharatiya Janata Party) – retiring on August 18

Goa – 1 seat

Vinay Dinu Tendulkar (Bharatiya Janata Party) – retiring on July 28
