Donald Trump won the national election to be confirmed the 47th president of the United States of America. This will be his second term holding the post, and he will become only the second US president—after Grover Cleveland in the last two decades of the 19th century—to get elected to two non-consecutive terms.
Trump crossed the magic figure of 270 Electoral College votes when he captured the battleground state of Wisconsin, putting him above the threshold of 270 electoral votes.
Of the 50 states, seven are considered as ‘battleground’ or ‘swing’ states as they decide the winner since their voters, at least a large proportion of them, are known to change their party affiliations from election to election.
Wisconsin, for example, as per various polls, was considered a ‘blue’ or Democratic Party-supporting state, and hence, in which Kamala Harris would win, but a majority of its voters voted for the ‘red’ (Republican Party colour) candidate Donald Trump.
Of the seven crucial swing states, Trump won North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and is ahead in Michigan, Nevada and Arizona.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat marks the second time in eight years (after Hillary Clinton in 2016, for the 2017-20 term) that a woman became the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee only to fall short of a barrier-breaking victory.
“This will be the golden age of America. America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Donald Trump declared, amid cheers by jubilant supporters.
An exit poll by CNN said roughly three-quarters of the electorate holds a negative view of the way things are going in USA, and the result was there for all to see today—Kamala Harris of the incumbent Democratic Party (and the current vice president) defeated comprehensively.
The Republican Party has also won the majority of the seats in the Senate, the election for which was held simultaneously. The verdict for the House of Representatives election has not yet been decided.
