December opening for historic under-river section of East-West Metro
At long last, this December, commuters would be able to take the metro through the tunnel below the river Hooghly, which is India’s first under-river metro railway. The opening would also open up the entire section of the East-West Metro, from Sector V in Salt Lake to Howrah Maidan.
The under-river section of the East-West Metro line (also called the green line) will be opened to the public this December, said Metro Railway, Kolkata general manager P Uday Kumar Reddy recently.
After being delayed repeatedly due to various technical issues, the opening of this section would complete the East-West Metro, from Sector V (Salt Lake) to Howrah Maidan.
Trial runs on the stretch from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan started on April 13. Uday Kumar also said that the Sealdah to Esplanade link will become operational by June or July.
