Sylvester daCunha, the advertising professional who gained fame for creating the iconic ‘Amul Girl’, passed away earlier today.

The Amul campaign depicting the Amul Girl happens to be the longest continuously-running advertisement campaign in a single character. The ‘Amul Girl’ has featured in the dairy giant’s advertisements continuously for 56 years.

daCunha conceived the ‘Utterly Butterly Girl’, as she is also known, with his art director Eustace Fernandes, with inputs from Dr Verghese Kurien, the founder-chairman of the National Dairy Development Board.

His advertising company, daCunha Associates is known primarily for the Amul advertisements.

Kurien had suggested a mischievous little girl for a mascot and daCunha and Fernandes put their creative brains together.
