State-owned oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) today revised upward the price of the 19-kg commercial cooking gas cylinder across the country by Rs 12-18.

LPG prices are usually reset on the first of every month but an increase by a significant just before the presentation of the interim Budget and also a few months before the general election surprised both the common people and experts.

Among the big cities, Kolkata has been handed the highest increase in price, by Rs 18 per cylinder. The price now stands at Rs 1,887.

The price of jet fuel too has been increased. However, the price of the household LPG cylinder (14.2 kg) remains constant.

With the rise in the price of the commercial LPG cylinder, the prices of food items too might see a rise in some establishments.

Chennai sees the lowest increase, by Rs 12.5 per cylinder (but the price there is also the highest), followed by Delhi at Rs 14 and Mumbai at Rs 15 per cylinder.

The current 19-kg cylinder prices currently stand at Rs 1,937 in Chennai, Rs 1,769.50 in Delhi and Rs 1,723.50 in Mumbai.
