CM Mamata Banerjee announces steps to curb price rise

July 9, 2024 | < 1 min read

The prices of agricultural products are continuously rising, prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to hold a meeting at Nabanna today.

Highlights of what the chief minister said:

  • There are no signs of prices decreasing, as a result of which people are afraid to go to the market.
  • I am also suggesting to wholesalers to buy onions from local farmers instead of from Nashik, Maharashtra, as the latter are not benefitting from the rising prices; profiteers are doing brisk business.
  • I am instructed the police to monitor the markets.
  • Nabanna will set up a task force. Until the prices decreased, the task force will regularly visit markets and update me on a weekly basis as how much the prices have decreased.
  • Vegetable prices must decrease within 10 days.
  • Large traders are hoarding potatoes in cold storages, reducing the supply and thus increasing the prices.
  • Before exporting potatoes or onions to other states, the needs of our state must be met first. If necessary, the state borders would be monitored.
