To improve safety in trains, Indian Railways has decided to will instal CCTV cameras in 75,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives (inside driver’s cabins). The cameras will record audio as well.

The formal name for this CCTV system, as given by the Railways, is ‘Crew Voice and Video Recording System’.

Having such recordings with the Railway authorities is expected to help prevent both train disasters and the occurrence of passenger safety issues.

This kind of CCTV coverage is already available in approximately 7,000 coaches covering the premier trains like Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duranto trains. Now, it will be extended to mail and express trains, and suburban trains.

The project will be implemented by RailTel Corporation of India, a wholly-owned PSU of Indian Railways, under a working order from the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).

As part of improving the safety of women, CCTV cameras have also been installed at stations across the country under the Nirbhaya Scheme.
